Atlanta’s Expansion Optimistic

12 12 2008

Atlanta was home to the WUSA team Atlanta Beat, but didn’t make the cut to be one of the inaugural teams for the WPS. Instead, Atlanta has been marked as a 2010 expansion city. The article out of the Atlanta Business Chronical today gains some insight on the future franchise from the owner, Fritz Johnson.

Johnson says they will not play in ill-suited stadiums like Georgia Tech’s Bobby Dodd Stadium or Morris Brown’s Herndon Stadium. They are looking into other options, likely a new stadium to be built at Kennesaw State University. I wonder if perhaps the Silverback’s stadium, RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium, is an option being examined. The third phase of the project was to expand it from 4,500 to 7,500 seats, somewhat ideal for a WPS franchise at the present time.
