Year of the WPS

7 01 2009

Get ready for a big January folks. It already started off with a bang when NJ Sky Blue set up agreements with Australian World Cup scorers Collette McCallum and Sarah Walsh. What good news for Sky Blue. Sarah Walsh is a forward who has notched 26 goals in 55 games for Australia, and creative midfielder Collette McCallum played 38 times for the Matildas and hit net 8 times. What is even better is that they both have experience together, playing in the 2006 AFC Asian Women’s Cup, 2007 World Cup, and on the Pali Blues (USL W-League) together. They are also young players with a lot of playing days ahead of them (Walsh is 25, McCallum is 22). They also both speak english as a first language, so communicating on the field, in practices, and in every day life should be easy from the get go.

To the surprise of no one, head coach Tony DiCicco aknowledged the Boston Breakers will most likely select Amy Rodriguez with the first pick in the WPS Draft. The 21 year old striker for the USA has played 29 times and netted 6 goals already. It looks like Boston may have a forward tandem of the youngest US goal scoring sensation and the oldest US legend (still playing) in Kristine Lilly. The draft will happen next week, January 16th.

The Marta saga is coming to a close- thank God. Marta may be the David Beckham of blog hits in the internet world, but I honestly would like to move on from what has been a long story line. It seems quite clear after Umea withdrew its offer that Marta is heading to Los Angeles. It is supposed to come to a head on January 12th, when the LA Sol will announce the signing in combination with the FIFA World Player Gala.
