“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” – MLK Jr. Perhaps we could also say that the pursuit of justice somewhere is a threat to injustice everywhere. Women’s opportunity to play professional soccer has been hard to come by all across the world. This year, women from around the world will come to the United States of America to help create a professional league that is at a high level, but also building a foundation for even better things to come in the future. In the past attempt, the league wanted to jump right to a position of equal attention and respect that the other professional leagues recieve. This time around they are prepared for a long road of obstacles that will require a great deal of collective effort and will uniquely test each person involved. It is not that women’s professional soccer is not already deserving of equal respect and attention, but it is an unfortunate reality that change is an ardous task taken up by a few and resisted by many. So I end with two applicable MLK Jr quotes.
“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.”
“We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.”
